Dr. José M. Navas is a research scientist at the Spanish National Institute for Agricultural, Food Research and Technology (INIA) in Madrid. He also acts as Director of the Department of Environment (80 staff members, 22 research scientists) and is head of the Endocrine Disruption and Toxicity of Contaminants research group. He obtained his PhD on the reproductive physiology of fish in 1997 at the University of Valencia. Thereafter he worked for two and a half years at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig, Germany, in the framework of a Marie Curie fellowship. Here he began his in vitro work studying the mechanisms of toxicity and endocrine disruption of a variety of xenobiotics. After coming back to Spain with a Marie Curie Return Fellowship and obtaining several research contracts he received a permanent position at the INIA in 2005. From that time until the present Dr. Navas has concentrated on the study of the mechanisms underlying the action of endocrine disrupters and the toxicity of nanoparticles in fish. Fish and mammalian cell lines constitute a basic research tool in his group. Any alteration observed at the transcriptional, protein or enzymatic levels after exposure of the cells to the studied chemicals is detected and serves to elucidatethe mechanism of toxicity. These studies are carried out in parallel with detailed physico-chemical characterization of nanomaterials and chemical analysis, using next-generation techniques, to determine real exposure conditions. Currently, he is a Spanish representative at the OECD-WPMN and at the ECHA NM-WG and has also been named member of the ECVAM Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC). - Curriculum Vitae
